In hospitals and in community medicine, “consultations for suspected Covid-19 have continued to increase for eight weeks”, indicates the health agency in its latest epidemiological bulletin, relayed by the French press.
Since the beginning of June, the number of visits to the emergency room as well as acts for suspected Covid recorded by SOS Médecins have doubled, going from 995 to 1,507 between June 3 and 10, according to the same source.
All age groups are affected by this increase, but more particularly those over 75 and those under 2, specifies SPF.
The factors explaining this rebound are diverse, notably the return of mild temperatures which tends to encourage gatherings. The spread of the virus is also facilitated by the circulation of new variants, according to specialists.
According to experts cited by the press, the sub-variants of the virus would more easily circumvent immunity acquired by previous infection or by vaccination, but “no evidence to date suggests that these variants cause more severe forms of the disease”. In addition, despite a possible decline in herd immunity, the significant level of immunity acquired through vaccination and previous infections makes the evolution of the virus more difficult.
Although there is no concern about a new epidemic outbreak, health authorities are increasing their vigilance as the Olympics approach. Anne-Claude Crémieux, president of the technical commission for vaccinations of the High Authority for Health (HAS), cited by the French newspaper “Le Figaro”, underlines that “the circulation of these new variants coupled with the mixing of populations expected during the Olympics inevitably becomes a factor favoring the spread of Sars-CoV-2.”
The rebound of Covid is not limited to France since other European countries, notably Spain, are also recording an increase in the circulation of the virus, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). ). However, the indicators remain at moderate levels for the moment.
