This Wednesday, June 12, a fight broke out in the Italian parliament between deputies, during a debate on regional autonomy.
During a lively debate, a clash took place between several Italian deputies. One of them came out in a wheelchair.
The debate which was the trigger for this chaotic scene had the subject “differentiated autonomy” according to The Parisian. It is a proposal from the government of Giorgia Meloni, to be able to grant more autonomy to the regions.
In the middle of the debate, Leonardo Donno of the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) party decides to stand up in protest and hold out the Italian tricolor to Roberto Calderoli, the minister of regional affairs and autonomy.
“I was scared”
Several majority deputies decided to attack him after this gesture. “A League deputy punched him twice in the head“, testifies Marco Grimaldi.
“Among the various blows, I also received one to the sternum and I collapsed because I couldn’t breathe. I was scared“, says Leonardo Donno. After falling, the deputy will be escorted in a wheelchair.
“I tried to hit him, but I didn’t hit him“, admits Igor Iezzi. “Donno tried to attack Carderoli and I reacted. I walked away and he fell like a pear”continues Iezzi.
The reactions of political parties
“The attack that occurred in the Chamber against Leonardo Donno is a very serious and shameful fact. Our MP simply wanted to give an Italian flag to Calderoli’s minister, when he was physically attacked by parliamentarians from the majority, including the member of the Northern League, Iezzi, who punched him and fell to the ground“, accuses the Movimento 5 Stelle party in a press release.
For their part, the far-right party also responds. “Contrary to what was reported by some media and by some representatives of the Movimento 5 Stelle movement, it was MP Donno of the M5S who attacked Minister Calderoli“.”The video shows how the events actually happened“, he adds.
