On France Inter, the Social Democratic MEP warned of the consequences of the election of Donald Trump for the Old Continent.
“We are not ready.” At the microphone of France Inter, Raphaël Glucksmann expressed his concern after the election of Donald Trump. The return to business of the Republican billionaire is, neither more nor less, “the capitulation of Europe decided elsewhere than in Europe”. For the MEP, “the coming weeks and months are decisive”while Donald Trump intends to reduce American support for Ukraine. Raphaël Glucksmann fears a «deal» between the American president and Vladimir Putin, which could place the Old Continent “in the situation of Czechoslovakia in 1938”. A reference to the Munich agreements which made it possible to resolve the Sudetenland crisis, to the detriment of the integrity of the Czech state.
The founder of the Place publique party asks the Twenty-Seven to come out of their “naivete” pour “become an adult” et “be able to ensure your own safety”. “We are in a herbivorous mentality”launched the MEP, in allusion to the comments made the day before by Emmanuel Macron. During a meeting in Budapest of the European Political Community, the President of the Republic warned that “if we decide to remain herbivores, the carnivores will win”.
“The locomotive of Europe is Poland”
Despite the presence of “Trojan horses of Putin and Trump” within the European institutions, Raphaël Glucksmann is convinced that there is a majority to set a “more impressive, more exciting and more mobilizing course”. The social democrat invites European leaders to take an example from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose lucidity in the face of the situation he salutes. To the point of considering that “the locomotive of Europe is no longer France nor Germany, but Poland”.
Raphaël Glucksmann took the opportunity to draw national lessons from the American election, drawing a parallel between the former industrial states which voted for Donald Trump and Hauts-de-France. “In working-class lands which have always voted on the left, today they are voting for the National Rally”he emphasizes, drawing the following constant: “The left has completely deserted the question of work and industry.” The MEP, however, refuses to discuss the next presidential election, while François Ruffin has opened the door to a candidacy. “I am absolutely not going to talk about 2027 at a time when I do not know if Europe will still be at peace in 2025”asserted Raphaël Glucksmann.
