Trump’s victory: nasty wake-up call…

At 51% of the popular vote, Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election is undeniable. Bad wake-up call for the planet.

Defeated in 2020 by Democrat Joe Biden, his comeback marks the triumph of an authoritarian leader, openly racist, sexist and stuck to the interests of the same wealthy elites of which he is a part.

Swearing that God saved his life so that he could save his country. Trump moves from personality cult to messianism. Ditto for his all-powerful ally Elon Musk, whom he praised at length in his victory speech.

A threat to women

For American women, whether they voted for Trump or not, the threat is particularly strong. The right to abortion, weakened by conservative judges appointed by Trump to the Supreme Court, will suffer even more.

Well beyond American borders, his uninhibited misogyny has also become a school since his first election in 2016. His return will continue to fuel the beast in social media and masculinist movements.

Most women know that they should never take their rights for granted. The defeat of Democrat Kamala Harris and her incessant calls to protect women’s “reproductive freedom” reiterates this.

Real anger

Trump’s consecration is, however, a complex phenomenon with numerous mechanisms, including the undeniable influence of powerful disinformation networks and their repeated attacks against traditional media.

It is also impossible to ignore this muted anger against stifling inflation, the housing crisis and immigration seen as uncontrolled.

In this way, Trump’s return serves as a serious warning to other governments claiming to be progressive or centrist, but which have failed to protect their citizens from the same devious effects, magnified by the pandemic.

History teaches us in fact that any victory of the right, even if it always leads to more social inequalities, first of all signals the failure of the center or the left to prevent them. Pierre Poilievre understood this well…
