Russian “progress” in “all tactical directions”

The small town of Umanské, less than 180 inhabitants before the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine in February 2022, is located approximately 25 km northwest of Donetsk, a large regional city under Russian control.

On Friday, the new Russian Defense Minister, Andrei Beloussov, welcomed “some progress” carried out by his army in Ukraine “in all tactical directions”.

According to him, 880 km² of Ukrainian territory have been conquered by Russian troops since January 1, 2024. The Ukrainian army, lacking ammunition and men, has been struggling for several months, with Russia having launched a new offensive at the beginning of May on the outskirts of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city.

Russian forces also continue to push in the east, particularly in the direction of Pokrovsk, about thirty kilometers northwest of Umanské. kyiv hopes that the upcoming delivery of long-awaited Western munitions will enable it to regain the advantage on the front where it has been on the decline for several months.

The United States, which has so far refused to do so, gave the green light this week for Ukraine to strike, under certain conditions, targets on Russian soil in order to defend the Kharkiv region.
