Michel Barnier arrived this Friday, October 18 at the beginning of the afternoon in Menton, to discuss the means of strengthen border control and of fight against illegal immigration with two transalpine ministers, Antonio Tajani (Foreign Affairs) and Matteo Piantedosi (Interior).
The head of government is accompanied by his Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleauwhose positions on migration matters are considered close to those of the National Rally… and the far-right Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
At the beginning of October, the French and Italian governments agreed to create, at the beginning of 2025, a cooperation unit to exchange intelligence on migrant smuggling networksbased on the model of a structure operating since 2020 between France and the United Kingdom.
Controversial deal in Italy
After a work meeting at Villa Maria Serenafar from microphones and cameras, the four men had to visit the police and customs cooperation center located in Ponte San Ludovico (Ventimiglia).
Michel Barnier and Bruno Retailleau were then to return to the city of lemons to visit the premises of the departmental border police service (PAF) and the Saint Ludovic border post.
This official visit comes after the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed a law on Monday evening to facilitate the expulsion of irregular migrants.
Giorgia Meloni concludes she is sidelined a controversial agreement with Albaniawhich allows Italy to send migrants to this country.
