French-speaking people’s enthusiasm for extreme cruises – far from mass tourism – continues to grow. Arctic and Antarctica attract the most fortunate.

Discovering penguins Cinema – notably in “The Emperor’s March” – has magnified the size of penguins, undoubtedly due to the shots filmed from a low angle, while the Adélie or Royal species surprise by their size closer to that of dwarves of garden. No matter: the observation of their adaptability to a hostile biotope remains astonishing. To protect themselves from the cold, they group together like turtles, huddled together. We are surprised by their inability to fly, compensated by an incredible mastery of swimming (up to 30 km/hour). Some have a pocket under their beak where they store the fish that they bring back to their young.

There is cruise and cruise. On the one hand, the “floating cities”, like Icon of the Seas, the latest oversized cruise ship, capable – to the legitimate chagrin of NGOs – of taking on board 8,000 people. On the other, there are human-sized boats, for more exclusive experiences. The latter are particularly suited to the exploration of territories lacking adequate port infrastructure. They slip through fjords and straits, where the giants do not pass.
