Washington: car rushes into White House, driver killed

A man hit the gates of the White House security gates at high speed, the American secret services said this Sunday.

The driver of the vehicle died.

“Just before 10:30 p.m., a vehicle arriving at a high speed collided with one of the security perimeter gates around the White House”, in Washington, the American secret services indicated on X this Sunday. Its driver was killed, without there being any threat to safety, they announced. Members of the security services present on the scene immediately attempted to rescue the driver, but he “had died”they clarified.

Anthony Gugielmi, spokesperson for the Secret Service, responsible for White House security, clarified that there was no “no threat or implications for public safety”. But an investigation is underway.

In January, the driver of a vehicle was arrested for also hitting one of the security perimeter gates. The White House has been the subject of several intrusion attempts in recent years, sufficiently worrying that the security services decided in 2020 to build a new barrier, taller and made of more resistant metal, around the perimeter of the presidential residence.
