More than eight million Chadians are called to the polls this Monday, May 6 to elect their next president. Ten candidates are in the running for the first round of the presidential election which will put an end to the transition which has lasted since April 20, 2021, the date of the death of Idriss Déby Itno.

The electoral campaign, which started on April 14, is in full swing and ends this Saturday.

It is being done without the participation of ten candidates, notably opponents Nassour Ibrahim Neguy Koursami and Rakhis Ahmat Saleh, whose files were deemed “non-compliant” and “inadmissible” by the Chadian Constitutional Court.

For this election, ten candidates are in the running, including Mahamat Deby Itno, the president of the transition, his Prime Minister and former fierce opponent, Succes Masra, Albert Pahimi Padacké, former prime minister, and Lydie Beassemda, the only candidate.

For many observers, Mahamat Deby Itno, supported by the Chad United coalition, and Succès Masra, supported by the Justice and Equality coalition, are the two favorites in this election.

As a reminder, Chad has been led since April 20, 2021 by Mahamat Idriss Déby, who succeeded his late father, Idriss Déby Itno, in power for 30 years. The latter was killed in combat while the Chadian armed forces faced the Front pour l’alternation et la concorde au Tchad, a rebel group.

Last December, during a constitutional referendum, Chadians voted in favor of a new constitution, which establishes a highly decentralized unitary state. An important step for the presidential election on May 6.
