Expected in the series “Daredevil”, where he reprises his role as Punisher, Jon Bernthal joins the cast of the adaptation of “The Odyssey” which Christopher Nolan will shoot from February.
From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Christopher Nolan, there is only one step. That Tom Holland, Zendaya and even Charlize Theron (whom we certainly haven’t seen since the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange 2) are preparing to cross with The Odyssey, adaptation of Homer’s famous epic poem by the Oppenheimer’s Oscar-winning director. But they will not be alone, since Jon Bernthal, the Punisher of the MCU, also joins the cast of the film expected on July 15, 2026 in our theaters.
The role of the actor, also seen in The Wolf of Wall Street, Sicario, Baby Driver or even Night at the Museum 2 (alongside Alain Chabat, who became his friend), was not revealed by Deadline, except who owes the information. But this is already the case for the rest of the cast (which also includes Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson), even if many imagined that Tom Holland would play Telemachus, the son of Ulysses to whom Matt Damon, once announced as the headliner, would lend his features.
Except that it is rumored today that it is the star of Spider-Man and Uncharted who would play the main role of the feature film, centered on the long return of Ulysses to his island of Ithaca after the Trojan War, which is not without raising some questions. Because the English actor, aged 28, seems too young to play a character who took part in a ten-year-long conflict, while his teenage son stands up against the suitors who revolve around his mother Penelope.
Filming begins in February 2025
-To the extent that subjectivity is part of Christopher Nolan’s cinematographic grammar, it is also possible that his Odyssey follows the point of view of Telemachus, even if this raises other questions, since the young man is not alongside of his father when the latter faces the sirens or the cyclops Polyphemus. As usual with the director, who manages to create mystery with a story that we think we already know, we will have to be patient before knowing more about the film, which will shoot between February and August 2025, with the faithful Hoyte van Hoytema (Oscar winner for Oppenheimer too) as cinematographer.
Sets are also under construction in Morocco, near the Ouarzazate studios (which notably hosted the shooting of Mission Cleopatra and Kingdom of Heaven), where the landscapes and the architecture of the buildings are ideal for films of ‘era. Which therefore suggests that Christopher Nolan’s version will not be modern or futuristic, but again, we will have to wait to see more to have an idea of what what is already presented as one of the most anticipated films of 2026.
In the meantime, it is on the small screen that we will find Jon Bernthal, since he reprises his role as Punisher in the series Daredevil: Born Again, broadcast from March 5 on Disney+.
