After being delayed by the Los Angeles fires, nominations for this year’s 97th Academy Awards have been announced and Emilia Perezby Jacques Audiard, is once again at the head of the pack.

The French film in Spanish language totals 13 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best International Film. These nominations set an Oscar record for a non-English film, the previous being the 10 nominations for Roma d’Alfonso Cuarón.

This daring musical comedy won two Palmes at last year (best actress and jury prize), the prize for best film (comedy, musical) at the Golden Globes and dominates most categories for this year’s Oscars. It’s also one of our best films of 2024.

Karla Sofia Gascón, the star d’Emilia PerezEast made history with her nomination, becoming the first openly transgender actress nominated for an Oscar.

Only three transgender people have been nominated for Oscars before: musician Anohni, composer Angela Morley and documentarian Yance Ford.

The nomination of Karla Sofia Gascón, who plays both a drug lord and the woman she becomes, comes as the rights of transgender people are under threat in the United States.

The new American president Donald Trump decided this week that the country would now only recognize two gendersan announcement that sparked an outcry among the LGBTQ+ community and its supporters.

Speaking of Donald Trump, another of the boldest films of 2024, The Apprenticegot two nominations for actors Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong.

The film features the formative years of the American billionaire, in a way that does not seem to be to the taste of the main person concerned.

Donald Trump has in fact described the people involved in the film as“human waste” and it’s a safe bet he’s furious about the double nominations, as well as the fact that Karla Sofia Gascón is the favorite in a tight race for best actress.

Emilia Perez is closely followed by The Brutalist (winner of best film (drama) at the Golden Globes) and, quite surprisingly, by Wicked. Both have 10 nominations, including Best Picture.

Criticisms against The Brutalist concerning using AI during post-production to improve Hungarian-language dialogue from stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones will therefore not have prevented the film from being nominated for the Oscars.

The Bob Dylan biopic A complete stranger and the papal thriller Conclave each obtained 8 nominations; Anorawinner of the Palme d’Or last year, follows with six nominations; Dune : Part Two et The Substance each have five nominations.

All are nominated for the Best Film award, alongside Nickel Boys and the astonishing Brazilian film I’m Still Herewhich earned three nominations in total, including Best International Film and Best Actress for Fernanda Torres.

On the other hand, Dahomey by Mati Diop, winner of the Berlinale, and The Bibi Files by Alexis Bloom are absent from the Best Documentary section, while Wild fig tree seeds by Mohammad Rasoulof did not receive any nominations in the Best Film category and was only nominated once, in the Best International Feature Film category.

Other exclusions this year: no nomination for Babygirl, Queerand nothing either for Kneecapanother one of our favorite films of 2024.

Furthermore, the director of The SubstanceCoralie Fargeat, is the only woman nominated in the best director category, which includes Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez) and, surprisingly, James Mangold (A complete stranger).

While last year’s Oscars had a big favorite with Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, who won seven of the thirteen awards for which he was nominated (including best film, best actor and best actress), this year is less predictable. As for best film, and despite Emilia Pérez’s domination of the nominations, the race remains very open.

Four films were nominated by the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild and the Screen Actors Guild (Anora, A complete stranger, Conclave et Emilia Perez), while The Brutalist won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Drama). Doubt therefore remains as to which film will emerge victorious.

What is certain is thatEmilia Perez is Netflix’s best chance to win the Best Picture Oscar. Despite its international popularity, the streaming giant has never won the top prize.

This year’s ceremony will also include a special tribute to Los Angeles after the devastating wildfires earlier this month.

“We will reflect on recent events while highlighting the strength, creativity and optimism that characterize Los Angeles and our industry”declare the organizers.
