An albino red-bellied turtle was born in a zoo in the south of France, a ‘rare’ event, the tropical reserve announced in a press release on Thursday.
The aquatic species, native to rivers and swamps in Australia and New Guinea, is ‘relatively common in captivity’, explains the establishment, but ‘the birth of an albino individual is an extremely rare phenomenon, representing a true singularity in within this species.
La Ferme aux Crocodiles, located in Pierrelatte, promises ‘special attention’ for the baby turtle, which is sensitive to light.
Albinism is a genetic disorder characterized by the complete or partial absence of pigmentation in the skin, eyes and scales.
