Lost, The Disappeared, It’s a cult series of pop culture. An old-school series, with very long seasons, very long episodes, and cliffhangers breathtaking: back then, we watched series on TV and had to wait forever to find out what happened next. Then Lostit’s a series that changed the history of series a little, a small revolution, with an overpriced pilot, still as well rated. But if the beginning was successful, the end was somewhat… criticized. And imagine that I am one of the rare people to have liked the last episode, soberly titled Fin. So why do I like the ending of Lost ?

The end of Lost did not provide all the answers to our questions, and this is undoubtedly what made viewers most nervous

Already, the series ends as it began: Jack is lying on the ground in the bamboo forest, injured, and his eye closes, after opening in the same place in the first episode. Between the first and last episodes, a lot of things happened, and that’s what makes this finale so moving. We were treated to a crash on an island, a whole host of adventures, flashbacksof the flashforwards and even flashsideways. It’s true that we got a bit confused, including the showrunners, who opened a lot of question boxes while forgetting to close some of them. And that’s, I think, what was the most annoying: we were waiting for answers, and we didn’t get them all. Personally, I watched season 1 when it aired on TF1 in 2005, then I gave up before binge-watching everything ten years later. I knew the ending was controversial and when I saw it, I said to myself: “In the end, it’s better than I feared.”

Lost: a human and philosophical ending

So okay, not everything is very rational, but the series has never been. From the pilot, there are already mysteries! The island is a character in its own right, there is supernatural, science fiction… And if this ending is beautiful, because all the characters of Lost finally reunite, even though they didn’t die at the same time. These characters that we loved so much and who suffered so much are now at peace: Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Claire, Charlie, Locke…. They all meet in a church, and understand how important they were in each other’s lives, why the island was so important to them… before entering the light together and moving on by going to the afterlife. This reunion is an image: they accept their death and their past. So it’s true that it’s an ambiguous, complicated conclusion, more spiritual than down-to-earth, and I understand that it was frustrating. But this ending is above all very human and philosophical. And it allowed me to turn the page… like its characters.
