Tuesday, November 12, Netflix announced the return in 2025 of a series which was a hit in the United States this summer and went more unnoticed in France. A season 2 which will perhaps allow the French to develop a passion for this American sport.
Can we make it more American? A group of young women whose job is to support the Football team during matches. Cheerleaders are a true institution in the United States. A discipline that Netflix has obviously highlighted in a documentary series. In America’s Sweethearts, Les cheerleaders de Dallas Cowboys, which has gone almost unnoticed in France, we follow the season of the official cheerleading team of the Dallas Cowboys, the National Football League (NFL) team from Dallas, Texas. Thanks to good audiences across the Atlantic and a 100% approval score from critics on the Rotten Tomatoes site (and 60% of fans who recommend the series), the program will be entitled to a second season. It must be said that season 1, directed by Greg Whitley – who we already know for Cheerin particular, and which can boast of having been nominated for the Emmy Awards – remained for five weeks in the top 10 of the most viewed series on the platform this summer.
America’s Sweethearts : a deep dive into the Dallas cheerleading squad
In season 1 of America’s Sweetheartswe learned, in 7 episodes, to know the 36 cheerleaders of the team, while following their training, the matches and the birth of the choreographies. In a few days, one of these numbers, on the song Thunderstruck by the group AC/DC, went completely viral and thousands of anonymous people tried to reproduce the choreography. Sports fans then found some familiar faces, who had already appeared on reality TV Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders : Making the teamin which we followed the recruitment process to enter this elite pompom team.
Netflix won't let go of Dallas Cowboys anytime soon
For the Season 2 announcement, Netflix brought in a handful of cheerleaders from the team. In about twenty seconds, they dance and make a rallying cry that leaves no room for chance. America’s Sweethearts will be back in 2025. At the end of season 1, Greg Whitley had hoped, with Variety, “have more time to see if we can go further with more team members”. Netflix should also soon release a series focusing on the Dallas Cowboys football players, the history of the team as well as the personality of its owner, Jerry Jones.
