For two euros, the René-Char media library offers Issoirians (Puy-de-Dôme) the opportunity to buy back its damaged books of the year. A solution to avoid putting them in the trash.
Like every year for 17 years, the Issoire media library is organizing a clearance sale from June 25 to 29. Old books, outdated manuals and even old dictionaries, nearly 3,000 objects will be found on the Raoul-Ollier square in front of the establishment.
Avoid throwing away
“It’s an event that we want to be festive, which is successful every year,” says Marie Domas, director of the media library. “We rarely have excess items. Those that remain are stored in our book box.” And for good reason, the works are on sale at a symbolic price: two euros.

The idea of this event is to allow past collections from the media library to find a second life. “Twenty years ago, all books went in the trash, even those that weren’t damaged, and we wanted to change that.”
The IOUPI method
To sort between what will be in the flea market stand and what will remain on the establishment’s shelves, Marie Domas uses the IOUPI, or weeding, method. Developed by the Public Information Library (BPI) of Paris, it consists of removing Incorrect, Ordinary, Used, Out-of-date or Inadequate works (IOUPI) from the shelves.

The collections are released little by little so that even the latest ones can sell off. This year, in addition to books, we will also find some toys and board games from the games library. The sale will be held during the opening hours of the media library. It will also be installed during lunchtime. In case of bad weather, the stands will be placed inside the establishment.
