Franck Wallez lives in a 20 m² apartment. He pays rent of 500 euros per month and his lease is for ten months maximum. It is his new employer who offers him this accommodation. “I wasn’t looking for bigger, it’s no use. I’m here for the week so it’s perfect”declares this engineer at Ouest-Alu, in the TF1 report at the top of this article.
Franck Wallez has just been hired as an engineer in this company based in Les Herbiers, in Vendée. He now goes to work by bike. Without the support of his company, which acts as guarantor, renting on site would not have been easy. “I couldn’t find accommodation nearby. When I was looking for one, in May, accommodation was only available from October even though I was supposed to start working in June”, he testifies. Without the help of his company specializing in the construction of aluminum structures, Franck would have found himself in Cholet, around thirty kilometers away.
“Counter precariousness”
The residence where Franck Wallez lives has around twenty apartments, including five reserved by his company. This is a plus for the promising person who manages this file, because without a permanent contract, it is difficult to find accommodation. “When [les salariés] change jobs, they are on a trial period or they are on a fixed-term contract. We must counter this precariousness on the rental market and the key is precisely for the company to support their rental application”declares Jérôme Duret, director of the Duret real estate group.

In Les Herbiers, the unemployment rate is one of the lowest in France and there is a shortage of rentals. Other companies in this town, such as the Liébot group, also accommodate their employees. The management of the Liébot group has dedicated 10,000 euros over the past year to this end. Further south of the department, the town of Sables-d’Olonne also faces a tense real estate market.
