Credits from the Green Fund, dedicated to projects to accelerate the ecological transition, could fall by 1.5 billion euros in the 2025 budget.

“It’s a bad signal,” denounces the former Minister of the Environment, Christophe Béchu, on TF1.

And “bad signal”. This is how the former Minister of the Environment Christophe Béchu (Horizons) describes this Wednesday, October 9, the probable reduction of 1.5 billion euros in Green Fund credits envisaged in the 2025 budget. “It’s a bad signal because it’s the subsidy that is used today to accelerate the ecological transition”he lamented on TF1 (see video at the top of this article).

We never talk about the cost of inaction

Christophe Béchu on TF1

“The problem in terms of ecology is that we never talk about the cost of inaction. Except that if we do not invest, for example, to prevent the rise of the oceans and coastline erosion what it will cost us in the end, if we do nothing, it will be ten times more expensive for public finances”he explained. Launched in 2022, this envelope exclusively dedicated to projects to accelerate the ecological transition of communities had seen its credits increased to 2.5 billion euros in 2024, compared to 1.5 billion initially.

The draft budget will be revealed on Thursday, but preparatory documents envisage a significant slimming down of this fund, with a reduction of 1.5 billion euros in credits. “It’s important to look at the places where you can remove fat or add justice and the areas in which, conversely, you take risks tomorrow for the future”Christophe Béchu once again regretted.
