Martin Laciga, former Swiss beach volleyball player, is dead

The famous Swiss beach volleyball player died on Tuesday at the age of 48. He had announced in recent weeks to suffer from severe acute depression.

They formed with his brother Paul a formidable pair in beach volleyball. In agreement with the family, Swiss Volley announced the disappearance of Martin Laciga on Tuesday August 25. He was 48 years old.

Martin Laciga is considered one of the pioneers of beach volleyball in Switzerland and was one of the most talented Swiss players of all time. For 18 years, he achieved numerous international successes and contributed to the development of beach volleyball.

Sporty of the year

World number 1 in 1999, vice-world champion the same year, triple European champion, double European vice-champion, triple Swiss champion, with several rankings in the top 10 at the Olympic Games and elected Swiss sportsman of the year 1999 by teamsMartin Laciga achieved legendary performances for Swiss beach volleyball.

Together with his brother Paul, the Seelander played a key role in the development of beach volleyball. The two brothers marked the scene from 1995 to 2004. Martin Laciga also enjoyed success with subsequent partners Markus Egger, Jan Schneider and Jefferson Bellaguarda.

“I had no more strength”

Ten years ago, Martin Laciga put an end to his active career as a beach volleyball player. He got involved off the field for the sport that was so close to his heart.

The last weeks of Martin Laciga were marked by a severe acute depression. Tinu’s last words:

“I just wanted to play and have fun. I had no more strength for this fight.
