The Hughes Fire, which broke out in the morning, destroyed more than 39 square kilometers of vegetation, causing plumes of black smoke near Castaic Lake. More than 31,000 people had to evacuate, while another 23,000 were under alert. The fire is difficult to control, but firefighters are making progress. Interstate 5, a key road, was closed for 30 miles due to the flames. Wind gusts, reaching 96 km/h, complicate efforts to fight the fire, already fueled by persistent drought in the region.
