This severe cold will have repercussions on playtime spent outside for children at school.
According to the management team at Saint-Justin elementary school in Montreal, decisions about going outside are made according to Environment Canada’s weather forecasts and according to the temperature chart for children.
This chart is based on temperatures and wind speed. It was designed by the Quebec government to guide educators in organizing their day.
Since this morning, the Saint-Justin school team has mentioned that they are in the yellow zone, which indicates that during outdoor games, educators “must remain vigilant and closely observe the children to spot signs of discomfort or cooling”.
According to the school, outdoor periods are currently shortened and educators pay particular attention to children’s clothing and thermal comfort.
-The school emphasizes, however, that “outdoor games are necessary, even when it is cold.” She mentions that the sun comforts both educators and children and that they move around a lot “which makes time spent outside more pleasant.”
