The Ministry of Ecological Transition published the latest fuel price data this Monday.
Unsurprisingly, the increase continues for gasoline and diesel.
Refueling has never been so expensive since summer 2024.
They hadn’t been this high in months. According to data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition (new window) published this Monday, January 20, fuel prices continue to break records. The week of January 13, at gas stations across the country, a liter of diesel sold on average for 1.7233 euros, or 4.2 cents more than the previous seven days. The same goes for a liter of gasoline, which rose on average to 1.7747 euros, or 1.9 cents more than the week of January 6.
Oil prices rising sharply
Above all, such amounts had not been reached in France for months. For diesel, you have to go back to July 12, 2024 to find any trace of a higher price (1.7253 euros per liter on average). The same goes for the liter of gasoline, which had not been so high since August 9 (1.7751 euros per liter on average). Both then fell to their lowest since 2022, before gradually rising again since October.
Several factors can explain this increase. Among them, oil prices. Powered by the International Energy Agency’s upward revision of demand in the fourth quarter of 2024, and while American sanctions against Russia are still being felt on the market, they have jumped again since mid-January.

The price of a barrel of Brent from the North Sea, for delivery in March, increased by 2.64% to 82.03 dollars, the highest since July 2024. Its American equivalent, the barrel of West Texas Intermediate, for delivery in February, gained 3.28% and exceeded the mark of 80 dollars per barrel, at 80.04 dollars.
