19

This Sunday morning, Ugo Humbert lost in the round of 16 of the Australian Open against world number 2 Alexander Zverev (6-1, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2).

At the end of last season, Alexander Zverev put an end to Ugo Humbert’s impressive run at the Rolex Masters. It was again the German who stopped Messin, in his first round of 16 at the Australian Open. A logical defeat for Ugo Humbert, who still performed well in the ATP rankings (14th in the world), moving slightly closer to the top 10.

Zverev quickly

Alexander Zverev was clearly above the Frenchman. From the first set, the German asphyxiated Ugo Humbert by making three breaks without conceding his throw in (6-1). Messin held on in the second set, to pick up the score and offer a glimmer of hope (6-2). But Zverev immediately regained control of the match, which he won without trembling (6-1, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2).

Statistically, the world number 2 outclassed his opponent in all sectors. More winning shots (43/23), fewer unforced errors (29/41), more aces (19/12), more points won at the net… In the end, Alexander Zverev won almost thirty more points. This gap represents the step that the Frenchman still has to climb to be able to play in the final four in the Grand Slam, or win the Masters 1000.
