PGA golf tournament canceled at Riviera due to fires.

The Genesis Invitational, the PGA Tour’s flagship tournament which usually takes place each February at Riviera Country Club, will not be able to take place on this historic course this year due to wildfires in Los Angeles, the organization announced Thursday.

“Our priority remains the safety and well-being of everyone affected by this unprecedented natural disaster in Greater Los Angeles,” organizers said in a statement. “We thank emergency responders for their life-saving efforts and hard work to put an end to these tragic fires. »

“Out of respect for the ongoing situation, we have decided that the 2025 Genesis Invitational will take place at an alternative location during the week of February 10-16. We will provide an update regarding the venue and other tournament information in the coming days. »

Part of the American West Tour, the event is organized in collaboration with the Tiger Woods Foundation. The latter, due to injuries, rarely participates in competitions lately, but generally makes an effort to play at Riviera.

“We are trying to understand the situation and make sure everyone is safe, with meetings planned in the coming days,” he said recently. “Our focus is not really on the tournament, but rather on ways to help those who are in distress, who have lost their homes and had their lives turned upside down. »

The tournament was first played at Riviera as the Los Angeles Open in 1929, but for various reasons it has been held elsewhere over the years, including Rancho Park Course, Hillcrest Country Club, Wilshire Country Club, at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, and more recently, in 1988, at Valencia Country Club.

Although the course and clubhouse at Riviera did not suffer damage, the surrounding area experienced enormous losses.

The PGA Tour, Genesis and Riviera are seeking to “identify the most impactful ways the tournament can support the Los Angeles community and ongoing relief efforts,” the statement said.
