Having just retired, former Portuguese international Nani recently gave his opinion on the situation of Ruben Amorim in the ranks of Manchester United.
Currently fifteenth in the Premier League standings, the Manchester United club is experiencing unprecedented difficulties in its modern history. At the dawn of the twenty-first day of the championship, the Mancunian team already has no less than nine defeats on the national scene, which constitutes a very sad record at this stage of the season. Arriving in the middle of this, Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim cannot be solely responsible for the current difficulties encountered by the Red Devils, but it is clear that he has not yet managed to turn things around.
Ruben Amorim can count on strong support
The first assessments of Ruben Amorim’s Mancunian adventure do not really speak in his favor. For good reason, the former Portuguese international remains on a series of four matches without the slightest victory in the league, with a series of three consecutive defeats at the heart of it. In these conditions, criticism is gradually beginning to rain down around the man chosen by management to put Manchester United back on track.
Over the past few hours, the Portuguese technician has still been able to count on the praise of his compatriot Nani, who has worn the colors of the Red Devils for a long time in the past. “Ruben Amorim has always been a calm, correct and professional man. As a player, he wanted to do his job well, to understand what the coaches asked of him. He ended his playing career quite early and then he became a coach, and I quickly heard about his performances with modest clubs. It was no surprise to see him arrive at Sporting and succeed to this extent. Generally, coaches who excel with modest clubs have a lot of talent”he first told BBC Sports about his former teammate in the selection.
But the former 2016 European champion did not stop there. Beyond retracing the glorious journey of the young coach, Nani also spoke about the difficulties currently encountered by the latter in the ranks of Manchester United. “For me, at the moment, he is the right coach at Manchester United. Obviously, as supporters, we want results as quickly as possible. But there’s more to solving a problem at a club like Manchester United than just snapping your fingers and waiting for it to happen. He needs time”he said.
Decisive deadlines in the coming days
Time, Ruben Amorim will not necessarily have any. For good reason, the Manchester United coach must deal with a particularly sustained pace, while his team is currently playing on several tables. Freshly qualified in the FA Cup, after a victory on penalties against Arsenal, the Portuguese is preparing to return to the English championship this Thursday evening, during a meeting which will pit him against the red lantern, Southampton.
This weekend, it is against Brighton that Ruben Amorim will try to take points, before hosting Glasgow Rangers next week, as part of the Europa League. Key deadlines, which could well allow the Portuguese coach to give a second wind to his team. Or on the contrary, make it a little more difficult.
