Nawaf Salam, the new Lebanese Prime Minister, has resigned as judge president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), with immediate effect, the UN’s most important tribunal announced on Tuesday.
“Mr. Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the International Court of Justice, has resigned from his functions as a member of the Court with effect from today, January 14, 2025,” the court said in a statement.
“His mandate as member and president of the Court was to expire on February 5, 2027,” added the ICJ, which sits in The Hague.

Nawaf Salam, a 71-year-old Beirut judge, was named Prime Minister of Lebanon on Monday.
Mr. Salam became a member of the ICJ on February 6, 2018 and was elected its president on February 6, 2024. Previously, he served, from July 2007 to December 2017, as ambassador and permanent representative of Lebanon to the the UN in New York, said the ICJ.
