Pro Taiwan, Marco Rubio was notably the subject of Chinese sanctions for his active opposition to Beijing’s policies in the regions of Xinjiang and Hong Kong.

Chosen by Donald Trump as the next head of American diplomacy, Marco Rubio will have his grand oral examination in the Senate this Wednesday, January 15, with a view to confirming his appointment. Before the Foreign Affairs Committee, the 53-year-old potential future secretary of state must assert in his opening remarks that the post-Cold War world order is not only “obsolete”but that he became “now a weapon in use” against the United States.

According to extracts published by his services ahead of the confirmation hearing of his nomination, the current senator from Florida will also assert that China has “cheated” with a view to achieving global superpower status. “We welcomed the Chinese Communist Party into this world order” post-Cold War, and “they took advantage of all its benefits, but they ignored all its duties and responsibilities”he will declare. Born in Miami to Cuban parents, Marco Rubio is known for his hostile positions against China and Iran, and for his unwavering support for Israel.

Pro Taiwan, he was notably the subject of Chinese sanctions for his active opposition to Beijing’s policies in the regions of Xinjiang and Hong Kong. If his nomination is confirmed by the Senate, Marco Rubio will lead the world’s leading diplomatic network, with more than 55,000 employees, and will be the face of America abroad. As Secretary of State, he will be responsible for implementing Donald Trump’s slogan: “peace through strength”an old concept of realpolitik that the president-elect wants to bring up to date.

Other hearings expected

In the United States, the Constitution requires that appointments of ministers and other senior officials be confirmed by a vote in the Senate, after a hearing in the committee responsible for the position in question. With a more classic and consensual profile, Marco Rubio should experience a less hectic hearing than that of his colleague designated to become Minister of Defense, Pete Hegset, which took place the day before.

This former major and Fox News presenter was taken to task by Democratic senators on the Armed Services Committee, who criticized him for an accusation of sexual assault dating from 2017, but also castigated his opposition to the presence of women in combat troops and its relationship to alcohol. Other hearings besides that of Marco Rubio will take place on Wednesday in the Senate, notably that of Pam Bondi, chosen by Donald Trump to head the Department of Justice; but also that of John Ratcliffe, as the next head of the CIA, the main American intelligence agency.
