Delhaize reached an agreement with the group Louis Delhaize regarding the acquisition of Delfood : this wholesaler supplies 325 convenience stores and service station stores in Belgium, largely under the Louis Delhaize brand, which remains.
Maintaining the brand
The acquisition concerns all Louis Delhaize stores, other stores supplied by Delfood, its logistics services and its headquarters in Belgium. These activities will continue to exist and the Louis Delhaize brand will also be retained. Delhaize is thus strengthening its position on the Belgian distribution market, and more particularly in the convenience store segment. In 2024, the retailer had a market share of 22.59%.
“We are convinced that we can develop the potential of Louis Delhaize stores and independent partner stores and create growth with Delfood’s experienced employees and affiliates. It is also a nod to history since this transaction brings together two companies with the same name and from the same founding family, after more than 150 years of existence,” declared Xavier Piesvaux, CEO of Delhaize. Indeed, Louis Delhaize was founded in 1875 by a brother of the founders of Delhaize, but until now there was no economic link between the two companies.
According to Louis Delhaize, the sale of Delfood to Delhaize is “the best option to ensure the future of the company and its staff and guarantee its development”. The group has almost completely withdrawn from its retail activities in recent years: Match, Smatch and Délitraiteur were sold to Colruyt Grouponly the seven hypermarkets Cora remain.
The transaction is subject to approval by the Belgian Competition Authority (BMA). Delhaize’s ambition is to finalize this acquisition by the end of 2025.
