The bye week could take on its full meaning for the Detroit Lions as the team risks regaining one of its important pieces on the offensive level.

Head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday he expects running back David Montgomery to be available for the divisional playoff game, which is the second round in the NFL.

The 27-year-old running back was injured in December during a game against the Buffalo Bills and early reports raised concerns that his season might be over. He did not return to the game in the regular season, but it appears that his knee injury will not prevent him from being in uniform in the playoffs.

The Lions have won all season on the ground thanks to their duo Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, nicknamed “Knuckles and Sonic”, because of the contribution of each on the field. Known for his power runs, Montgomery, or “Knuckles,” distinguished himself with 12 touchdowns and 775 rushing yards on 185 carries.

Gibbs held down the fort admirably in his teammate’s absence. “Sonic” finished the season with 20 touchdowns. In addition to his 1,412 rushing yards, he also amassed 517 receiving yards.

Thanks to their victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the final game of the season, in which Gibbs scored four touchdowns, Detroit finished first in the National Association with a 15-2 record and thus clinched the precious bye for the first week. They are therefore waiting to know their opponents for their first elimination clash.
