Shortly before his departure from WWE in 2023, Edge faced Sheamus during an episode of SmackDown, marking his final match in the federation. He then joined All Elite Wrestling and still plays in Tony Khan’s company under the name “Cope”.
Recently interviewed by Chris Van Vliet, Sheamus returned to this match against Edge which took place in Toronto. He says he didn’t know at the time whether the Canadian wrestler was going to stay or leave WWE.
Sheamus tells us:
“We talked about it. I remember we talked about doing an angle together, a storyline together. We had imagined a storyline, but it was turned down for some reason, and then it just happened. I just got a call because we did a promo the week before and we did the match the following week.
Edge’s contract was coming to an end. No one knew if he was going to stay or go. No one really knew, me either. I thought he was going to stay because we were also talking about doing something after that. I think it was originally going to be Damian Priest, but then it turned to me. I don’t know how it happened, but I was really surprised that it happened…and also excited because Edge and I had never had a one-on-one match.”
