A 66-year-old man, who was riding his bike in Leernes (-l’Évêque), died last week. Police have since made two arrests.

A 66-year-old cyclist lost his life last week in Leernes (Fontaine-l’Évêque) after being the victim of a gunshot. The man was cycling on rue du Cimetière when he was shot in the head.

An investigation was quickly opened to try to shed light on the circumstances of this tragedy. According to information collected by our editorial team this Tuesday, we learned that two arrests took place a few days ago. They are two young adults.

The Charleroi public prosecutor’s office reacted: “We cannot affirm at this stage of the investigation the existence of a dispute or an altercation having been at the origin of the shooting of the cyclist.” The first elements of the investigation show that there is no real motive to justify this act of violence.

“I can’t tell you much, but from what I know and what comes to me, it would be for nothing. It’s all the more awful. It would be for a word, for a look… What do I know? It’s monstrous.”told us Yves Demanet, lawyer for the victim’s family.

The widow of the family is now in a “total incomprehension”. According to him, the deceased had just been retired. “A new life was offered to them. By killing him, we killed a husband, a father, a grandfather, a citizen… who had the misfortune of doing sport on his bike peacefully. He asked for nothing to anyone, he didn’t bother anyone”deplores the family lawyer.

The family hopes to get answers, to know why this tragedy happened. “This lady, and the rest of her family, do not understand why a life was taken like this.”

The hunting weapon discarded

The Federal Judicial Police (PJF) of Charleroi were able to carry out their investigation effectively thanks, in particular, to ANPR and Zoller (telephony) cameras. Fast and efficient work highlighted by the lawyer for the victim’s family. “At a time when our palaces are collapsing, justice is still functioning. You have an efficient, effective investigating judge, as discreet as they are effective. You have efficient, effective federal police investigators who have taken on their time and energy to find answers to what happened And on top of that, whether it was the local or federal police, they were of extraordinary empathy and humanity (… ) They were concerned about the widow, they stayed in contact with her. While respecting the confidentiality of the investigation, they said what they could say to her to respond to her immense distress. It is a human character that must be emphasized.

The hunting accident was mentioned by the mayor of the commune. But this hypothesis was quickly swept away, notably by “the absence of cranial deformation”he said. “We imagined a shot with a slow caliber and little effectiveness, which excluded a hunting rifle which has much more traumatic effects, since the aim of hunting is to kill, and therefore there is a deforming factor which is very important, especially on a human skull Here, we know from tests and from work which are known to specialists, that when there are no extremely traumatic lesions, these are small calibers, that is to say. weapon of fist or long gun.”

However, questions still arise, particularly as to the origin of the weapon used to kill the sixty-year-old.
