The manufacturer, which currently dominates the AI and GPU market, seems to want to attract gamers with a downwardly revised price list, with one exception.
The RTX 5070, priced at $549, becomes the star of this announcement. It promises the performance of an RTX 4090 – which sold for $1,599 – for just a third of the price. A technical and commercial feat that could democratize high-end performance… in theory.
The mid-range is not left out: the RTX 5070 Ti is priced at $749 (compared to $799 for the 4070 Ti) while the RTX 5080 is priced at $999 (versus $1199 for the 4080).
Unsurprisingly, only the RTX 5090, flagship of the range, sees its price increase: it is announced at $1999, or $400 more than the RTX 4090 which was launched at $1599.
The reality behind the advertised prices
These prices, as attractive as they may be, are only recommended prices (MSRP) by Nvidia for its “Founders Edition” versions. In reality, the vast majority of cards sold will be personalized versions from partners (Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.) which will be systematically more expensive.
This difference is explained by several factors: more sophisticated cooling systems, modified PCBs, and above all a greater margin for manufacturers. It is not uncommon to see custom versions display prices 20 to 30% higher than the reference prices.
The situation is likely to be even more tense with current demand. As Nvidia has become the undisputed leader in AI with a market capitalization of $3.3 trillion, production could be partly oriented towards the professional sector, creating a possible shortage in the gaming market.
Scalpers, these opportunistic resellers, could also take advantage of the situation. The success of the RTX 40 and the growing demand for GPUs for AI suggest limited availability, which could drive up prices on the secondary market.
