October 19, 2015

Justin Trudeau, aged 44, is elected Prime Minister of Canada in an election in which the Liberal Party wins 184 ridings across the country. His coming to power ends Stephen Harper’s almost 10-year reign as Conservative prime minister.

December 20, 2017

One of the first scandals of the Trudeau era. The Federal Ethics Commissioner, Mary Dawson, releases her report in which she concludes that Justin Trudeau violated the code of ethics of elected officials by agreeing to spend his family vacation at the private residence of the Aga Khan, in 2016. He received several million dollars in federal funds that year.

June 21, 2018

The Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Actbetter known as the “carbon tax” comes into force. This controversial law is one of Justin Trudeau’s flagship measures during his first term. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has pledged to end the carbon tax if he is elected prime minister.

August 31, 2018

The federal government announces that it will buy the Trans Mountain pipeline for the sum of $4.7 billion after its developer, Kinder Morgan, abandoned plans to extend it. A controversial decision which will not allow Justin Trudeau to retain his parliamentary majority a year later.

October 17, 2018

The Cannabis law officially comes into force, legalizing the sale and consumption of marijuana in the country. As soon as he came to power in 2015, Justin Trudeau indicated that he wanted to adopt new legislation to legalize the use of cannabis for recreational purposes.

October 21, 2019

Justin Trudeau is re-elected as Prime Minister, but the Liberals lose their majority in the House of Commons. The PLC elected 154 deputies against 121 for the Conservatives, 32 for the Bloc Québécois, 24 for the NDP and three for the Green Party. This second, minority mandate will only last two years.

September 20, 2021

Re-elected a third time as head of the country, Justin Trudeau still cannot form a majority government. The results remain essentially the same as during the 2019 general elections. The Liberals will succeed in remaining in power thanks to an agreement with the NDP.

February 14, 2022

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government is invoking the Emergency Measures Act and declares a state of emergency to put an end to the various blockades and “occupation” in the City of Ottawa. Justin Trudeau’s decision follows several weeks of demonstrations organized by truckers grouped in a “freedom convoy”.

The Liberal Party and the NDP announce that they have signed an agreement allowing the Trudeau government to remain in office on the condition of implementing measures demanded by the New Democrats. This agreement will, among other things, allow the creation of a national dental care program.

December 16, 2024

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, announces her resignation in a resounding letter in which she claims to have “deep disagreements” with Justin Trudeau on the direction to take for the country’s economy. Several elected officials from the Liberal caucus will demand the departure of Mr. Trudeau after the resignation of Mr.me Freeland.
