Despite the celebrations, the fighting has not abated between Ukraine and Russia, and neither have the victims. We take stock of the war figures at the start of the year.

In just over a month, the war between Ukraine and Russia will enter its third year. Tensions between Vladimir Putin and the rest of the world continue to increase, as do the number of victims in this conflict. Figures which, however, remain difficult to verify due to the propaganda of the two countries.

Larger armies

The escalation has been noticeable for several months, particularly with the strengthened ties between Pyongyang and Moscow, and the sending of North Korean soldiers alongside the Russian army. For its part, Ukraine has nearly a million soldiers in its ranks.

“The Ukrainian army is the largest in Europe. The second place after us () is four times smaller than us. I think the French have about 200,000. We have 980,000President Volodymyr Zelensky recently said in an interview with American podcaster Lex Fridman relayed by the Kyiv Independant.

Moscow also has the ambition to expand its ranks for this year 2025, bringing it to 1.5 million, according to Ukrainian media, but it is struggling to recruit new ones.

November, a deadly month

The number of victims (dead and injured) is difficult to quantify and verify. However, the British Ministry of Defense regularly gives figures. At the end of the year, on December 30, it indicated that the victims amounted to nearly 760,000 killed and injured.

The British Ministry of Defense also adds that the month of November was the deadliest since the start of the war, with an average of 1,523 victims per day.

In 2025, the conflict should take a new turn, with negotiations between kyiv and Moscow, but also the arrival of Donald Trump at the White House, who had assured that he could put an end to the conflict in 24 hours.
