Volodymyr Zelensky says he wants to agree with Donald Trump on a peace plan before discussing with Vladimir Putin

In an interview published this Sunday, January 5, Volodymyr Zelensky insisted on his desire to meet Donald Trump soon in order to agree on a peace plan around the war in Ukraine, before undertaking any negotiations with Vladimir Putin.

Strong words. Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to American podcaster Lex Fridman during a three-hour interview, published this Sunday, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. And this while February 24 will mark the third anniversary of the start of the conflict.

And if the Ukrainian president insisted on the fact that it is “very important that Europe has a voice” in the discussions, the 46-year-old head of state mainly focused on the return of Donald Trump to the White House and thus on its preponderant role in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

“First with Donald Trump, we agree on how to end the war, how to stop Vladimir Putin. Donald Trump and I will reach an agreement – and I am sure that he will be able to offer strong security guarantees with Europe – and then we will be able to talk to the Russians,” confided the former actor and screenwriter, who therefore seems particularly confident in the ability of the 45th and soon 47th President of the United States to put an end to one of the deadliest conflicts of the 21st century.

“It gives us confidence that he can end this war. I really count on him and I think our people really count on him. He has enough power to put pressure on Vladimir Putin,” he said.

“I think we share this idea of peace through strength”

Volodymyr Zelensky then spoke about the Republican’s current influence: “I see now that when I talk about something with Donald Trump, whether in person or on the phone, all the European leaders ask me how it is going. passed. “It shows his influence, and it’s never happened before with an American president, in my own experience,” he said, adding: “I love President Trump’s message when he speaks. I think we share this idea of peace through strength which is very important.”

However, the man who defeated Kamala Harris last November has, on several occasions, criticized the country’s financial and military support for Ukraine in recent months. But for Volodymyr Zelensky, the sanctions against Russia and the arms deliveries came too late under the presidency of Joe Biden, he who indicates “not wanting the same situation”.

Finally, the Ukrainian president, who could be present at the inauguration of Donald Trump, said he prays that the future American head of state does not withdraw the United States from NATO, as the latter may have suggested. , because such a withdrawal would represent “the biggest risk” for security in Europe.
