France shines in Hollywood
“Happy New Year to everyone. Health and morale because in 2025 we will need it!”, declared Jacques Audiard while receiving his first Golden Globe of the evening for Emilia Perezproduced by Saint Laurent. 2025 is off to a particularly good start for the French filmmaker and his musical about the intimate quest of a transgender woman determined to forget her past as a drug trafficker.
“I never had a sister and maybe that’s why I made a film about sisters. If we had more sisters in the world, maybe it would be better”he continued during his speech, preferring to leave room for his main actress for a political and luminous speech when receiving one of the main prizes. “You can put us in prison, beat us, but never take away our soul, our existence, our identitycried Karla Sofia Gascón. Today I can say that I have won: I am who I am and not who you want me to be.”
Demi Moore’s comeback
The actress competed in the Best Actress category in a comedy or musical, notably against Demi Moorein competition for another French creation: The Substance by Coralie Fargeat. Signing her comeback, the American was very moved when receiving her trophy: “I have been doing this job for a long time, more than 45 years and this is the first time I have earned anything as an actress.”
On the drama side, it’s the Brazilian Fernanda Torres, which won the prize coveted by Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Pamela Anderson and Tilda Swinton. 26 years ago, her mother was the first Brazilian actress nominated in this category.
The coronation of Adrien Brody
The night was therefore placed under the sign of second chances, the theme of the other big winner: The Brutalist by Brady Corbett. This feature film of more than 3h30 telling the story of an eminent Hungarian architect who emigrated to the United States after surviving the Shoah won over voters. He won the awards for Best Director, Best Dramatic Film and allowed Adrien Brody to leave with his first Golden Globe as Best Actor in a Drama Film.
Two months before the Oscars, these trophies set the tone for the weeks to come. See you on 3 mars to know whoEmilia Perez or from The Brutalist will see the premonition come true.
