Around 1:30 p.m., firefighters from the Quebec City Fire Protection Service (SPCIQ) responded to a fire in an apartment building on Saint-Victorien Street in Beauport.

A call was made to the 9-1-1 center mentioning that there was a fire in the drum housing the emergency exits.

Upon arrival on scene, the first unit confirmed the presence of smoke coming from the rear drum. The majority of the flames were located on the second floor of the three-story building with six apartments.

While crews battled the flames, other firefighters completed the evacuation of residents. No people were injured during the intervention.

Around 2:15 p.m., the operations manager transmitted the code “aggravation not likely”.

Around 35 firefighters worked on evacuation, extinguishing, propagation verification and ventilation operations. A second alarm even had to be triggered.

The damage is limited to a portion of the common area at the rear and to one accommodation which cannot be reinstated.

A civil security representative was on site to ensure that the occupants were taken care of by the Red Cross.

Non-functional smoke alarms

During the operation, SPCIQ firefighters noted that some smoke alarms were non-functional or missing in certain homes.

The SPCIQ would like to remind you that a functional smoke alarm less than 10 years old must be installed in each dwelling and on each floor of a residence. “They save lives,” writes Alexandre Lajoie in a press release.

The fire station’s investigation shows that a smoking article was the cause of the fire.
