The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday called on Israel to release the director of a hospital in the northern Gaza Strip arrested after a large raid on the establishment.
“Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip has been out of service since the raid, the forced evacuation of patients and staff and the detention of its director. We don’t know where he is. We demand his immediate release,” WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X. “Hospitals in Gaza have once again become battlefields and the health system is seriously threatened,” he said.
The Israeli army indicated on Saturday, at the end of its raid launched on Friday, that it had arrested the director of the Kamal Adwan hospital, Dr. Hossam Abou Safiya, whom it suspects of being a Hamas militant, as well as ” more than 240 Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists. She indicated that the latter would be transferred to Israel “for further investigations”.
Questioned on Sunday by theAFP She did not immediately comment on the fate of the hospital director.
