The Anaheim Ducks signed the forward Frank Vatrano a three-year, $18 million contract extension.
Pierre LeBrun reports that Vatrano will receive a base salary of $3 million and a deferred salary of $9 million. He will receive $900,000 per year for 10 years starting in 2035.
Frank Vatrano’s extension for 3 years and $18 million is interesting. He will receive $3 million per year in base salary, then $9 million in deferred salary. Starting 10 years ago, in 2035, he will earn $900,000 per year for 10 years, and his plan is to live outside of California (and its tax system) at that point in retirement. The Ducks, meanwhile, benefit from deferred payroll payments of $4.57 million (instead of $6 million AAV) on the contract. It’s a creative way for the team and the player to make it work. And maybe show other players in the future how to get around the California tax problem. – Pierre LeBrun
