An apartment building located on Saint-Georges Avenue in Edmundston, New Brunswick, was engulfed in flames Saturday evening. Ten people are left homeless.
The City Fire Department received a call around 7:50 p.m. reporting that a cooking fire had broken out in one of the basement units.

The Saint-Joseph Fire Department assisted Edmundston firefighters to fight the flames.
About 35 firefighters participated in the efforts. The cold weather overnight from Saturday to Sunday meant that teams took turns in their tasks to bring the fire under control.

During the operation, the structure of the house ended up collapsing and firefighters had to use a mechanical excavator to better target the flames.

The fire was finally brought under control at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The building is a total loss and its ten residents are now homeless.
The Red Cross took care of 7 of the 10 victims and is now trying to communicate with the 3 others.
An investigation to determine the causes of the fire is underway.
