Videos posted on social media show what appear to be explosions in the southern Rostov region, against the backdrop of air raid sirens.
“Last night, 61 Ukrainian drones were destroyed by our defenses,” the Russian Defense Ministry said, adding that most of them were destroyed near the border with Ukraine.
Four airports had to briefly interrupt air traffic early Sunday morning, “for security reasons,” forcing at least eight planes to divert, said a spokesperson for Rosaviatsia, the Russian civil aviation authority.
In and around the port city of Taganrog, debris from downed drones damaged homes, according to Rostov region governor Yuri Slyusar.
In response to Russian bombings in Ukraine, Kyiv regularly carries out drone strikes in Russia, particularly on military and energy sites.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, a total of 103 drones were fired by Russia overnight.
Among them, 61 were shot down, and 26 decoys neutralized.
Three people were injured in falling debris in the Kharkiv region, according to local authorities.
