The price of gray cement produced by the Chinese company Great Lakes Cement (GLC) in Tanganyika province has fallen. A 50 kg bag of 42.5 concentration which cost 34,000 Congolese francs (12USD) will now be sold at 29,900 Congolese francs (10 USD) and that of 32.5 concentration which sold for 29,000 francs will cost 26 000 FC (9 USD).
This price reduction is the result of negotiations between the provincial government of Tanganyika and the GLC company, the governor of this province announced on Friday, January 3.
For three months the authorities and the GLC company negotiated fiercely after consumers and economic operators repeatedly denounced the high price of this cement produced locally in the city of Kabimba. Some economic operators indicated that this same GLC product costs less when it is sold in other provinces or exported to other countries.
Despite this agreed reduction, GLC cement remains more expensive in Tanganyika than elsewhere, denounces Jules Mulya, president of the Federation of Congolese Companies (FEC)/Tanganyika:
« It is not normal that this cement here costs more than in Goma, Uvira and Kigoma (in Tanzania). It’s too expensive! cement which costs 26,000 francs here, in Goma it costs 21,000 francs ».
The FEC is therefore not satisfied with the outcome of the negotiations between the provincial government and the Chinese company. Economic operators intend to express their dissatisfaction to the governor of Tanganyika.
