The first weekend of the new year graces us with new movies and series on Netflix, Prime Video, and other popular streaming platforms.
At the top of my viewing list this weekend are two of my favorite films of 2024 that will be released on video on demand: the musical blockbuster “Wicked” and the family comedy-drama “A Real Pain.” Added to this are new seasons of “Mayfair Witches” and “The Rig”, as well as the launch of the real estate reality TV series “Selling the City” and “Going Dutch” with Denis Leary. Best of all, the Golden Globes are happening this weekend, with stars like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jeremy Allen White and Kristen Bell mingling (and getting drunk).
Here’s our guide to what to watch this weekend. For more recommendations, check out the 3 must-see movies in Prime Video’s top 10.

After Jo Koy’s mixed performance at last year’s Golden Globes, this year, Nikki Glaser — who impressed during the Tom Brady roast — promises to bring a needed spark of freshness. Obviously, the ceremony will not lack memorable moments; seeing movie and TV stars a little tipsy will always garner attention. Concerning prices, the film “Emilia Pérez” evokes with 10 Golden Globe nominationswhile “The Bear” takes the lead with five nominations in the series field.

Denis Leary returns for his first television series since FX’s “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” ended in 2016. He plays U.S. Army Col. Patrick Quinn, a decorated combat commander known for his bold and unfiltered remarks. After a particularly epic speech, he is sent to a base in the Netherlands as punishment. Having spent decades in war zones, Quinn now finds himself in charge of a virtually insignificant outpost — with a bowling alley and the army’s only cheese factory, but without weapons or strategic significance. He must train his disparate group of under-executives, including his own daughter.
