And the famous ATACMS are making headlines again. The Russian army claims this Saturday to have intercepted eight of these American missiles (ATACMS meaning “Army TACtical Missile System”) fired by Ukraine against its territory, which Moscow considers to be a red line.

Russian forces indicate that they have shot down these devices as well as “72 drones”, without specifying whether this new Ukrainian attack caused casualties and caused material damage.

Biden says yes, Trump says no

The administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden authorized the use of ATACMS by kyiv in November after having long opposed it, following the deployment, according to the West and Ukraine, of thousands of North Korean soldiers in support for Russian soldiers. Since then, kyiv has carried out several series of attacks using these long-range missiles, as well as British Storm Shadows.

Russia responded by firing for the first time an experimental hypersonic weapon called “Orechnik”, promising “a response” to each such Ukrainian attack on its territory. Vladimir Putin especially threatened to strike downtown kyiv in retaliation, without carrying out his words at this stage.

The latest news on the war in Ukraine

Donald Trump, whose return to the White House is scheduled for January 20, said in mid-December that he was “strongly opposed” to the use by the Ukrainian army of American ATACMS missiles, referring to an “intensification” and a ” worsening” of the conflict.
