Two weeks before his return to the White House, Donald Trump is preparing to complete his operation to rewrite history, says The New York Times. For four years, the former Republican president has successfully worked to “return” the story of the assault on the Capitol by his supporters, on January 6, 2021, a date he described as “day of love”. The presidency will offer him a megaphone as well as the power to pardon the rioters, which he promised to do “from the first hour” of his second term.
On January 20, during his inauguration following his victory in last November’s election, the Republican will stand in front of the Capitol. At the very place where the violent clashes took place between the police and the crowd, heated to death by Trump, who wanted to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. Some of these rioters, “pursued, convicted and imprisoned, came to be presented as patriotic martyrs”, reports the center-left daily.
“A large majority should not be in prison”
And his supporters incarcerated “counting the days until the absolution promised by Donald Trump”, relate The Guardian. Many are banking on this to return to normal life. “A large majority should not be in prison,” told the magazine Time the future president, specifying that the participants’ files would be studied “on a case by case basis, and if they were not violent…”.
The problem, observe The Wall Street Journal in an editorial, is that many of the rioters charged by the federal courts – around 1,600, out of a number of participants estimated at more than 10,000 by the police – did indeed use violence. Will those who used metal bars or anti-aggression spray also be pardoned? asks the daily newspaper. “This was the frightening reality of the Capitol riot that many would like to forget,” underlines the conservative title.
Joe Biden takes up the pen
The narrative promoted by Donald Trump and his supporters has caught on so much that his adversaries are now trying to combat collective amnesia. Starting with the outgoing president, Joe Biden, who himself signed a column in the columns of Washington Post, this January 6, 2025. Its title: “What Americans Should Remember About January 6.”
