The second semi-final of this United Cup 2025 went badly. After the great victory of the American Coco Gauff against the Czech Karolina Muchova (6-1, 6-4), everything was in place for the show when Tomas Machac pushed Taylor Fritz to the point of leading 7-6 (4 ), 5-2 despite trailing 3-0 in the first set. We could still feel the decisive double coming when the Czech served for the match at 5-3 after two missed match points at 5-2.
But all the suspense collapsed in a few minutes: a break from Fritz and Macha&c was no longer going to score a single game, giving up at 5-6 in this second set. The reason did not seem obvious from the match, but the Czech seemed to point to his right thigh when throwing in the towel. Fritz confided that the Czech had told him about cramps when telling him he was abandoning the race.
The United States are therefore in the final of the United Cup at this strange end to the match. The final, on the other hand, should keep all its promises by pitting Gauff against Iga Swiatek in particular. Unless another twist of fate occurs, of course!
