French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock arrived in Damascus on Friday morning. The two diplomats first went to Saydnaya prison before meeting the new Syrian leader, Ahmed al-Charaa. The head of French diplomacy called on the new power for a “political solution” with the Kurds.
Visiting the Syrian capital Damascus, alongside his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called on the new Syrian power on Friday January 3 for a “political solution” with the Kurds, and asked the destruction of the country's chemical weapons stockpile.
“A political solution must be found with France's allies, the Kurds, so that they are fully integrated into this political process which is underway today,” he declared.
Jean-Noël Barrot and Annalena Baerbock met the new Syrian Islamist leader Ahmed al-Charaa on Friday, during a visit to Syria during which they insisted on the need for a peaceful and inclusive transition.
The new authorities have announced their intention to dissolve all armed groups after taking power. The FDS controls large swaths of the northeast of the country.
According to the Association of Detainees and the Missing of Saydnaya Prison (ADMSP), more than 4,000 detainees were released there on the day Damascus fell to rebels.
