Belgian football mourns Gilbert Van Binst, who died this Thursday at the age of 73. RSC Anderlecht, the club of which he was captain and with which he won 4 European titles, paid him a wonderful tribute.
“Gille” Van Binst was of course an absolute legend at RSC Anderlecht, where he spent most of his career and won four European titles, becoming a true legend of both Parc Astrid and Belgian football.
Unsurprisingly, RSC Anderlecht paid him a vibrant tribute. Van Binst indeed won two Belgian championship titles (1972, 1974) but above all four European titles with Sporting, namely two European Cup Winners’ Cups and two Super Cups in 1976 and 1978.
“Intractable on the right side of the defense, Gille played 262 games for RSC Anderlecht. During this period, he won two titles, four Belgian Cups and two European Super Cups. He also played a key role in the two Cups. European cup winners gleaned by Sporting”, writes RSC Anderlecht on its networks.
“In 1976, he lifted the Cup as captain in the legendary final won against West Ham. In the European Cup, in 1978, against Austria Vienna, he shared the goals with another legend during the victory 4-0: two for him, two for Robbie (Rensenbrink).”
“Gille was unique in his genre. In defense, but always forward. With repartee, quick wit. A special player that the Park will never forget. The Mauve & Blanc wish a lot of courage to his family”, concludes the Sporting d’Anderlecht press release.
