Tribute to Beckenbauer: Vogts finds Supercup name change “regrettable”

Tribute to Beckenbauer: Vogts finds Supercup name change “regrettable”

The renaming of the Supercup to the “Franz Beckenbauer Supercup” sparked criticism from Berti Vogts. He would have preferred a different solution.

Munich – From next season, the match between the German champion and the winner of the DFB-Pokal will no longer simply be referred to as the Supercup. Instead, the match will be titled the “Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup.” However, it remains to be seen whether this name change will enhance the appeal of this somewhat less popular competition. Berti Vogts considers the form of recognition chosen for the “Kaiser” to be a suboptimal solution.

January 7 marks the first anniversary of the death of Franz Beckenbauer. This gives Berti Vogts the opportunity to remember his long-time companion. His concern: Many young footballers might not recognize the name “Beckenbauer,” as he pointed out to the Rheinische Post.

“A player like Franz should never be forgotten. He ranks alongside players like Pelé and other great footballers of all time,” explained the former DFB coach. In Brazil, Pelé’s name is known by everyone, and Vogts wants a similar level of recognition for the FC Bayern legend in Germany. Although he describes the “renaming of the Supercup in his honor” as “fantastic,” he would have preferred a different form of recognition.

Vogts believes that Beckenbauer “deserved even more” than the renaming of the Super Cup, which is “just a match” – a fact he finds “unfortunate.” “I would have liked the DFB-Pokal to be named in honor of Franz. This competition takes place all year round and it’s not just a one-off match. Many more clubs participate, all of them would then honor his memory on the ground.” Shortly after Beckenbauer’s death, Vogts introduced the idea of renaming the DFB-Pokal in honor of the “Kaiser.”

Many fans are likely to share Vogts’ opinion on the current solution. The Super Cup is largely unpopular among them, and from a sporting point of view, the DFL competition often does not have the highest significance, as the participating teams rarely field their best team.

A year after the death of Franz Beckenbauer, not only Berti Vogts reflects on his life. A ZDF documentary features many of the “Kaiser’s” companions sharing their thoughts, including his brother Walter, who remembers the last intimate moments with Franz.
