Like every year after the holidays, the traditional galette des rois makes its return. Supermarket or bakery? Small or big prizes? What ingredients to avoid? Follow the leader.
With their golden and flaky appearance, one could be mistaken and confuse the pancakes sold in supermarkets with artisanal pancakes. Among all the references, which one to choose? Which cake will be crowned the best this year? For one couple interviewed, what matters most is its price: “In supermarkets, it’s between 7 and 9 euros, while in bakeries, most of the time it’s around ten or even twenty euros”. For others, it’s taste above all, to the detriment of the wallet.
It still costs between 20 and 30 euros on average in a bakery. In supermarkets, prices vary, from 3.80 euros for distributor brand pancakes, to just over 13 euros for the most expensive. But for these amounts, what about the ingredients? According to nutritionist Alexandra Retion, it is better to favor pancakes, in the fresh or frozen section, whose list of ingredients is the shortest: “If there are ingredients that you don’t have in your kitchen, that means you actually have additives and preservatives”. 60 million pancakes are sold each year, half of which are in supermarkets.
