During the night from Thursday to Friday, two vehicles were set on fire in Montreal – fires likely of criminal origin, according to the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM).

Posted at 7:07 a.m.

The first fire took place in the Ville-Marie district around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning. A person notified an SPVM patrol that a vehicle was on fire in a parking lot on Rue Lspérance, near Rue Ontario.

The second took place in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough around 7 a.m. Friday morning, for a vehicle parked on the 20e avenue, not far from rue Villeray.

The fires were quickly brought under control, but both vehicles are considered total losses. No one was injured in these events and there was no damage to neighboring properties.

In both cases, a suspect was observed near the vehicle when the fire broke out, but he fled before the police arrived, “which suggests arson”, underlines the agent Jean-Pierre Brabant, spokesperson for the SPVM.

The two vehicles were towed and will be examined by investigators from the arson unit to find evidence in order to establish the causes and circumstances surrounding these events.

As for whether the two events are linked or not, this has not yet been confirmed by the SPVM.

“We will see if we had the same modus operandi” by analyzing the images which could possibly be provided by surveillance cameras, by inspecting the vehicles and by questioning witnesses, specifies Jean-Pierre Brabant. “It’s certain that we never close any doors,” he adds.

As of 9 a.m. Friday morning, no arrests had yet been made. Both security perimeters were lifted.
